Analect 8: Applied Elements and Principles of Design

Elements:

Line:

This room covered in a natural form of line, not perfectly straight vertically or horizontally. The line, or movement, in this room is created by the hanging vines throughout the room.

Form:

This room uses the massive form of the ferns to add variety and visual appeal.

Space:

The split-leaf philodendron up against the white wall creates some very intriguing, natural negative space.

Texture:

This wall of all sorts of interior plants adds such a unique texture to this otherwise boring white wall.

Pattern:

The use of a real tree as well as the naturalistic, man-made tree on the wall create a unique pattern. This pattern results in a wild, outdoorsy, back-woodsy feel in the room.

Size:

Size often closely relates to proportion, as well as the function of the room, the size of other furnishings, etc. The flower arrangements in this room are pleasingly sized when factoring the use of the room: conversation. They are not too tall or overpowering, so you can still communicate with those across the table from you.

Color:

The theme of this room seems to be based on a blue monochromatic color scheme. It is not overpowering one color, but used different shades and tints of the color to make it more pleasing to the eye. Even the Hydrangea on the table follows the color scheme.

Principles:

Balance:

While this room is not perfectly arranged symmetrically, it uses asymmetrical balance to keep it visually pleasing.

Proportion:

While the plant on the table downstairs would seem large when standing beside it, because it is in somewhat of an entry way with vaulted ceiling, its height and size is pleasingly proportionate to the surrounding space.

Dominance:

This plant is an example of dominance by accent. It isn't the main focus of the room, but rather accents the rest of the room by adding some texture and height, but not taking away from the other elements in the room.
This room demonstrates dominance by focal point. The fig tree is the main focus, with chairs arranged surrounding it.

Contrast:

This kitchen uses contrast in wall and cabinetry textures. The wood up against the brick, while contrasting in color and texture, creates a warm, welcoming feel.

Rhythm:

The use rhythm by repetition of greens creates a lively corner to this sun room. While the plants are all different sizes and textures, they still create visual appeal with color.

Harmony:

By the use and repetition of a specific theme (sunflowers, yellow), the elements of this room work together to create visual harmony. With the accent pillows, ceiling pain, swags, curtains, flowers, etc, this room creates great harmony.

Unity:

This is a very blue room. It's repetition of color, texture, room-function, etc all come together to form unity. It is one in design and purpose.
